WINNIPEG -- Al Montoya spent 2013 as Winnipegs backup goaltender, but hes making a strong push for the starting job in the second half of the season. Montoya made 27 saves for the shutout as the Jets defeated the Buffalo Sabres 3-0 on Tuesday. Keaton Ellerby, Jacob Trouba and Anthony Peluso were the goal scorers as Montoya picked up his second shutout of the season and the Jets won their third straight game, matching their season-high. "For me its just about doing the right things in practice and working hard," said Montoya, who didnt offer an opinion on whether he deserved No. 1 status. The netminder won his sixth consecutive decision, and upped his record to 8-2-1. It was Montoyas second straight start for the Jets after coming on in relief of regular starter Ondrej Pavelec in the first period of a game last week against Minnesota. "Im fully aware of what Al Montoyas doing and how hes playing," said Jets coach Claude Noel. "He played very well again tonight. Youve got to give him full credit. You cant lose sight of the fact that Pavelecs our starting goalie." Sabres backup Jhonas Enroth got his 12th start of the season, and handed the Jets (19-18-5) the lead when a weak point shot from Ellerby snuck past his blocker in the first period. "I saw it all the way," Enroth said. "He literally threw a curveball at me. It was a knuckle puck that dipped right in front of me, and I just got a piece of it." The Sabres (11-25-4) thought they had tied the game when Marcus Foligno banged the puck past Montoya, but the referees ruled the net was dislodged before the puck went in. Video review was inconclusive, so the call on the ice stood. "If that goes our way its a different kind of game," said Sabres forward Drew Stafford, who knocked the net off. Trouba, the rookie defenceman, one-timed a Chris Thorburn pass to beat Enroth at 13:06 of the second period for his third goal of the season. Peluso added an empty-net goal with 1:28 remaining. The Jets have said theyll need to string together more than just a three-game streak to make a push for a Western Conference playoff spot. "I think every team struggles with consistency," Trouba said. "Its part of the game, and its what youre striving for." Enroth, who finished with 23 saves on 25 shots, hasnt had much help from his teammates this season. The Sabres have scored just 16 goals in his 12 starts. Buffalo failed to score on four power plays, while the Jets were blanked all three times they had the man advantage. While Montoyas US$601,000 salary is $3.3 million less than Pavelecs, his play could soon force Noel to re-evaluate the way he splits his goalies workloads. Pavelec is 11-16-4, with a .902 save percentage, while Montoya increased his save percentage to .934. After the game Noel said goalies, like special teams units, get hot and cold, and that the Jets would let things play out. The Sabres, owners of the NHLs worst record, had earned points in seven of their previous nine games, including a win against the Jets. That wasnt Winnipegs only loss against teams near the bottom of the standings. The Jets had been facing criticism for losses to Edmonton, Calgary and Florida, and vowed before the game that they wouldnt be taking their opponent lightly. "Youve got to come ready to play every game," Trouba said. "Theres no bad teams in this league. Everybodys got good players." Notes: Buffalo forward Ville Leino, who was shaken up against Washington on Sunday, was in the Sabres lineup but left after just three first-period shifts with a lower-body injury. a Jets forward Thorburn played in his 500th career game. a Winnipeg forward Blake Wheelers 10 goals in December were second only to Chicagos Patrick Sharp, who had 12. Trained by Art Sherman and ridden by Victor Espinoza, California Chrome will break from the No. 3 post, which has produced 10 winners in the previous 138 runnings of the 1 3/16-mile race, the last being Prairie Bayou in 1993. "Three is fine with me," Sherman said. "Most of the speed is on the outside of me. If they go, they go, I can tuck in right behind them without any problems. I think my horse will perform." So does California Chromes co-owner Steve Coburn, who dared to look ahead. "One race at a time," he said, "but Im still thinking Triple Crown." If California Chrome wins on Saturday, next up would be the Belmont Stakes on June 7. Only 11 horses have swept the Derby, Preakness and Belmont and none since 1978. California Chrome brings a five-race winning streak into the Preakness, having won that many by a combined 26 lengths. Still, his overwhelming odds surprised Sherman, a 77-year-old trainer who has never had a colt this good. "I never thought Id be that kind of price," he said. "I really thought Id be 6-5." Speedster Social Inclusion was the 5-1 second choice of new Pimlico oddsmaker Keith Feustle. The colt drew the No. 8 post. He skipped the Kentucky Derby and is one of seven new horses lining up to challenge California Chrome. "Im never afraid of nothing," owner Ron Sanchez said. "We have a great post position. We have slow horses to our outside. Thats going to help us a lot." Bayern and Ride On Curlin are the co-third choices at 10-1. Bayern, who ddrew the No.dddddddddddd 5 post, is trained by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, who is seeking a sixth Preakness win. Rosie Napravnik will ride the colt, trying to become the first female jockey to win the race. Ride On Curlin finished seventh in the Kentucky Derby two weeks ago. Once again, Ride On Curlin drew an outside post, landing in the No. 10 spot after breaking from the 19th position in the Derby starting gate under Calvin Borel. This time, Joel Rosario will ride the colt. Borel has switched to filly Ria Antonia, who is the longest shot in the field at 30-1. "I wish she was 50-1," co-owner Ron Paolucci said. "The way she works and trains, she thinks shes 3-5." She will try to become the first filly to win the Preakness since Rachel Alexandra beat the boys in 2009. Like Rachel, Ria Antonia did not run in the Derby first. She finished sixth in the Kentucky Oaks, held the day before the Derby. After the Oaks, Ria Antonias owners switched trainers, dumping Baffert for Tom Amoss. "I always wanted to run in this race," Paolucci said. "My filly is a really big filly, shes really solid. Coming back in two weeks gives her an absolute edge. I know its really going to help her." General a Rod is the only other Derby horse to try the Preakness. He was 11th at Churchill Downs. There is a trio of 20-1 shots in the field. One of them, Kid Cruz, is trained by Linda Rice, giving the Preakness a female trainer, jockey and filly in the same race for the first time. The other 20-1 shots are Pablo Del Monte, who drew the No. 9 post, and Ring Weekend, who will break from the No. 4 spot. Illinois Derby winner Dynamic Impact drew the No. 1 post, putting the colt along the rail, a spot not favoured by most trainers who fear getting trapped inside.
