Brazilian police say American swimmers were not robbed at gunpoint at a gas station as they claimed, but a law enforcement official did say a security guard used a gun to control the situation involving Ryan Lochte, Jimmy Feigen,?Jack Conger and Gunnar Bentz.Brazilian police had previously said no gun was involved. The change in the version of events came after police interviewed one of the security guards on Thursday. It further deepened the mystery of what happened inside the station and set off an international dispute. No robbery was committed against these athletes. They were not victims of the crimes they claimed, Civil Police chief Fernando Veloso said during an afternoon news conference Thursday.Veloso said the swimmers vandalized the bathroom on the side of the gas station, damaging mirrors and other property. No charges have been filed, Veloso said, but the swimmers could be charged with false communication of a crime and vandalism if the investigation concludes that they did something wrong. If they cooperate, Veloso said he sees no reason for them to stay in Brazil. He said surveillance video shows that employees of the gas station tried to control the situation but that the swimmers went to their taxi and tried to get away.?When employees realized what was going on, security guards asked the taxi driver not to leave and to wait for police.Veloso did not say a gun was pointed at the swimmers to prevent them from leaving, but an official told the Associated Press on condition of anonymity that a gun was used in that way. The surveillance video does show a man approaching the taxi with an object in his hand, but its not clear whether it is a gun.Veloso said the gun involved was a legal weapon used by the security guard.Veloso said the athletes refused to wait for police to arrive. During that time, a third person offered to interpret and explained to the athletes that they had to pay for what they had done to the bathroom. According to Veloso, they offered to pay in the form of a $20 bill and 100 reals (about $51).Veloso said in the news conference that one of the athletes had confirmed this version, saying there was no robbery. He added that the video confirms the swimmers were not victims of physical or verbal abuse.Lochte first recounted a robbery to his mother, Ileana Lochte, who spoke with reporters, the police official told the AP. That led to news coverage of the incident and prompted police attention.Conger and Bentz arrived at DEAT, the tourist police department, around 12:30 p.m. ET Thursday for questioning.?Feigan has not been interviewed by the police yet, Veloso said.Conger, Bentz and Feigen remain in Brazil, as authorities have ordered the seizure of their passports. A Brazilian judge also ordered Lochtes passport be seized, but he said he has already returned to the U.S.Brazilian authorities said in a statement Thursday that Conger and Bentz were taken off the airplane.?A police source told ESPN Brasil that the swimmers were interviewed for just more than three hours at the airport, with a Brazilian lawyer and representatives from the USOC and the U.S. consulate present.Stephen Conger, the father of Jack Conger, told ESPN on Thursday that his son slept in a hotel Wednesday night and was guarded by U.S. government personnel. Jack was never under arrest, according to his father. Its more a political ordeal than a criminal one, he said.Stephen Conger said the plan is for Jack to be on a plane home Thursday night. He said hes shared text messages with his son but said: Were as in the dark as anyone about what happened. I dont know if there was a robbery or not.NBC spoke with Lochte on Wednesday night and reported that he said he had left Rio and already returned home, as originally scheduled.Lochte backtracked on his initial comments to the network made Sunday, saying the barrel of the gun he had said was placed to his forehead was instead pointed in his direction. He also said the taxi wasnt pulled over but that the swimmers were robbed after making a stop at a gas station. He said when he was interviewed by police about the incident that no one had suggested he needed to stay in Brazil, nor had any officials expressed doubts over his account of the robbery, NBC reported.International Olympic Committee spokesman Mario Andrada said during a news conference Thursday that neither Lochte nor his teammates need to apologize for the incident. We have to understand that these kids came here to have fun. Lets give these kids a break, Andrada said. Sometimes you make decisions you later regret. They had fun. They made a mistake. Life goes on.Andradas comments were made before the reports that a robbery did not happen.Information from ESPNs?Shaun Assael?and?ESPN Brasils Gabriela Moreira was used in this report. Two batters later, the Rays left fielder had a chance to make up for it. Fuld called off the centre fielder on what would have been a game-tying sacrifice fly and threw out pinch-runner Daniel Nava for an inning-ending double play that helped the Rays beat Boston 2-1 on Monday night and retake first place in the AL East. "Off the bat, I knew I wanted that throw, and I knew it was going to be pretty close," said Fuld, who got so much into the throw that he tumbled over after releasing the ball, a move he called the "Fuld Flop." "I went from feeling really crummy to really, really good in about five minutes." David Price allowed just two hits over 7 1-3 innings to beat Boston for the second time in six days and give the Rays their 22nd victory in their last 26 games. Tampa Bay went 8-2 on their road trip to Toronto, Boston, New York and back to Boston on Monday night to make up a game that was rained out on Thursday. Price (6-5) was dominating before the makeup game was delayed for 39 minutes because of a brief downpour that arrived as fans were singing "Sweet Caroline" and he was warming up for the bottom of the eighth. The Rays left-hander stayed in the game, but retired just one batter -- after starting him out with three straight balls -- before manager Joe Maddon pulled him from the game. "He came back and got the strikeout, I understand, but I really didnt like it," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "I kicked myself. ... I knew I made a mistake" sending Price back out after the rain delay, Maddon said. "The guys way too important to the franchise and hes way too important to himself to jeopardize it on July 29." Joel Peralta gave up Lavarnways line drive that Fuld tried to chase instead of playing off the Green Monster for a single. But Nava couldnt score when Stephen Drews line drive went over right fielder Wil Myers head for a double. Nava tagged on Brandon Snyders fly ball to short left-centre, but catcher Jose Molina got his shin guard down as Navas leg slid under him and home plate umpire Jerry Meals signalled the out. Replays showed that Navas leg got the plate before the tag. "What I saw was Molina blocked the plate and Navas foot lifted. But in the replays, you could clearly see Navas foot got under for a split second and then lifted, so I was wrong on my decision," Meals told a pool reporterr from The Associated Press.dddddddddddd "From the angle I had, I did not see his foot get under Molinas shin guard." Boston manager John Farrell was ejected arguing the call. Red Sox owner John Henry tweeted, "A 2-game impact." "It was a missed call, a terrible call," Farrell said. "Clearly the angle of Jerry Meals behind the plate, he did not see the view, Daniel Nava clearly was safe. We should still be playing right now." Fernando Rodney pitched the ninth for his 26th save. He gave up a leadoff single to Jacoby Ellsbury, who stole second with one out, and walked David Ortiz with two outs. A 100 mph wild pitch moved the runners to second and third but Mike Napoli struck out on a 3-2 changeup to end the game. Felix Doubront (7-5) allowed two runs on eight hits and three walks, striking out four in five innings. Price pitched a five-hitter to beat the Red Sox on Wednesday and help the Rays move a half-game back in the AL East behind Boston, which had been in first since May 27. But the series finale was rained out on Thursday, bringing the teams back to Boston for the makeup on Monday night. Before they could finish things up at Fenway Park for the season, the Rays took over first place in the division on Friday and then gave it back on Sunday. Price allowed just Ortizs double high off the Green Monster to lead off the second inning and Snyders 302-foot fly ball off the Pesky Pole for a home run in the sixth. That was the only runner to get past second base against Price, who walked none and struck out eight to win for the fifth time in six starts since coming off the disabled list on July 2. The Rays led 2-0 after five on an RBI double from Sean Rodriguez and a run-scoring fielders choice by Myers. NOTES: The Rays acquired injured White Sox reliever Jesse Crain for future considerations. ... The Red Sox learned Ortiz wont be suspended for destroying the phones in the Baltimore dugout with a bat after being ejected for complaining about a pair of called strikes on Saturday. ...
