KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee guard Diamond DeShields couldnt understand it last season when fans would let her know how much they appreciated her. It didnt make sense to her why anyone would offer praise when she wasnt playing well.DeShields supreme confidence took a major hit during a 2015-16 season she calls a huge disappointment. Now the North Carolina transfer has it back and wants to help the Lady Volunteers reclaim their status as national contenders.Hopefully I can get back to knowing Im the best player on the floor as opposed to other people telling me, DeShields said. It didnt matter what other people said when I was at North Carolina. I knew it. Last year, it was like I had to have that constant reminder in order to even step out and compete sometimes.Tennessee went 22-14 last season to set a school record for losses, though a surprising NCAA Tournament run ended one step shy of the Final Four. DeShields had a team-high 14.3 points per game but came off the bench for nearly half the season while struggling to get healthy and adapt to her new teammates. She now feels better physically. Just as important, the 6-foot-1 junior feels better about herself. When I was at North Carolina, I was like a little firecracker ... a puppy off a leash, just running around like crazy, happy, energetic, excited, DeShields said. Now I have that energy and have that excitement, but Im a bigger dog now. I can sit, watch, observe and choose when to attack and when not to attack as opposed to always being one speed.Tennessee needs her that way. The Lady Vols backcourt is reeling from the announcement that Tea Cooper will miss the 2016-17 season and Andraya Carter is forgoing her final season of eligibility because of injuries. But theres one bit of good news.Diamond DeShields is now healthy, Tennessee coach Holly Warlick said. We needed her to be -- and shes been -- a great leader.DeShields says she hasnt felt this good since her freshman or sophomore year of high school. She said she was at 65 to 70 percent late last season because of nagging shin splints. She wants Tennessee to earn the Final Four bid and national title that have eluded the Lady Vols since 2008. Her individual goals are equally ambitious.I definitely want to be player of the year -- SEC and national player of the year, DeShields said. Whatever player of the year honors there are to get, I want it all. I want to make a defensive team. I never really got a defensive award, and Im going to try to do that this year.Growing up in an athletic family helps DeShields cope with the adversity shes encountered.DeShields mother, Tisha DeShields, was an All-American heptathlete at Tennessee. DeShields father is former major league second baseman Delino DeShields, who manages the Cincinnati Reds Triple-A affiliate in Louisville. DeShields is the younger sister of Texas Rangers outfielder Delino DeShields. Its OK to be great. Were going to celebrate you in your greatness, Tisha DeShields said. And its OK if there are days when you may not be as great. Thats a time when you come home to your sanctuary and recoup.DeShields said she got encouragement from her brother, who had his own struggles this season when he was temporarily sent down to the minors.I caught myself telling him a lot of the same things that people were telling me or that he (had been) telling me, DeShields said.DeShields has changed her offseason approach. She learned to cook and changed her diet. DeShields says she also is working out more and making sure to get treatment each day.I cant do the same thing (as before) and expect a different result, DeShields said. Thats the definition of insanity. Im not an insane person.DeShields and her teammates have extra motivation as they try to honor former Tennessee coach Pat Summitt, who died June 28. DeShields, who said she has known Summitt since the age of 10, recalled a moment after her transfer when Summitt hugged her and said, its about time you wear orange. She added that whether Holly put a bug in her ear before (Summitt) saw me or not, it made me feel super special. This is the house that Pat built, literally, DeShields said. You just want to do it for her. Now that shes gone, how are you going to honor her? The season we had last year would be unacceptable, super-disappointing for the fans, for the program, for us because of her passing. ... Most of us werent recruited by her, but shes the reason why were all here when its all said and done. Nike Vapormax Herren Billig .ca. Hey Kerry, big fan of yours, just finished reading your book. TORONTO -- The party in Chicago is still going strong, just like it would for a long time in these parts if the Toronto Maple Leafs ever end the NHLs longest Stanley Cup drought.Yes, the Maple Leafs were watching Wednesday night as the Chicago Cubs won the World Series for the first time in 108 years. And it was hard not to draw comparisons between the Cubs and Leafs, both iconic franchises in their respective sports with rabid, long-suffering fan bases. And both teams that have undertaken deep-rooted rebuilding efforts. The difference is that the Leafs, of course, have just started theirs. Team president Brendan Shanahan doesnt quite buy all the parallels, though. Not really, Shahanan said Friday during his teams practice. There are always so many different nuances to each teams approach in each sport. I couldnt even tell you all of the details [of how] Chicago has rebuilt its team. But I can say that we think were pointed in the right direction. For us, the hard part in the next step is going in the right direction. And its not enough. Thats the key phrase for us, always -- its never really enough until you truly get what you want. With guys like Mike Babcock and Lou Lamoriello running the team day-to-day, thats the approach they bring. But yes, Shanahan appreciates what the Cubs accomplished. The Cubs are a great story. I enjoyed it, he said. I lived in Boston during the lockout in 2004 when the [Boston Red] Sox did it, and Theo [Epstein] was there for that too. So Ive heard about the billy goat and Ive heard about the Curse of the Bambino. And Ive seen teams that got determined and ended those things. I think its a good lesson for everybody.Shanahan knows a thing or two about curses. The?Detroit Red Wings?had the NHLs longest Cup drought before winning it in 1997. Shanahan played on that team and remembers how that weighed on the fan base in Detroit. Canada snapped a 50-year Olympic hockey gold-medal drought in Salt Lake City in 2002 -- and yes, Shanahan was a key member of that team. So hes been there. But this would be the mother of them all.Other NHL teams expresssed interest in plucking Shanahan out of the leagues head office, but the Hall of Famer was lured by the one gig that presented the greatest challenge.dddddddddddd The opportunity to end the NHLs longest title drought in his hometown led Shanahan to accept the Leafs presidency in April 2014. The image of how this city would react to winning a Stanley Cup for the first time since 1967 is one that fuels him every single day.I think about winning here all the time, he said. Im a firm believer that our players have to do the same. You have to imagine it before you can do it.Watching Cubs players and fans celebrate certainly made Leafs players appreciate the potential parallel.Absolutely, its an iconic franchise and you know how much more it means in a place like that for baseball, and in places like here for hockey, Leafs winger James van Riemsdyk said Friday. You know how sweet that would be, to be part of something like that. Obviously it comes with its own set of challenges and maybe the microscope is a bit stronger in a place like this. But the rewards can be great if you can accomplish what you want to accomplish. The Leafs are still far from getting there, with so many key decisions still to be made. But?Auston Matthews, William Nylander, Mitch Marner and the rest of the leagues youngest team provide plenty of promise. But if theres one important factor where the comparison differs, its that the Cubs had unlimited financial resources with which to go after players, while the Leafs are limited by the NHLs salary cap. Thats just a reality.I wouldnt take anything away from what Theo did, because thats not a new reality for the Cubs and it hadnt worked for 108 years, Shanahan said of baseballs not having a salary cap. I think what he did was fantastic and Chicago is a great sports town. If youre a sports fan, you enjoyed watching that stuff. Its great, but its not the beginning nor the end of us focusing on what we hope to do here in Toronto. ' ' '
