CHASKA, Minn. -- There will be all sorts of scorching-hot takes and convoluted narratives after the first day of the Ryder Cup. Things such as: The Americans are soft for losing momentum in the afternoon matches! Or: The Europeans are being too sensitive about the hostile crowd! Second-guessing. Friday-evening quarterbacking. Tons of hindsight. You get the idea.Among all of this rhetoric, something might get lost -- something that was the overarching theme of the entire day. That was an absolute freakin blast. This was a brilliant day of golf -- from the first shot of the day, a drive from Justin Rose that silenced the raucous crowd, to the last shot of the day, an eagle putt from Rory McIlroy punctuated by screams and fist pumps and a few bows toward the gallery. If the Ryder Cup is guilty of being overhyped for the two years leading into each edition of the event, then Friday somehow lived up to that hype, and surpassed it.So what if the U.S. team looked too dominant in sweeping the morning foursomes session? So what if Europe pulverized the Americans in three of the four afternoon four-ball matches? So what if only one match actually reached the 17th hole, let alone the 18th?It was everything you could want in a Ryder Cup day. It was competitive and contentious. There were wild momentum swings. There was emotion over the recent passing of Arnold Palmer and tension over the partisan pandering of the home crowd.Maybe it wasnt collectively the best display of golf weve seen all year -- Open Championship, anyone? -- but there might not have been another day that was as much fun.Obviously, theres a lot of energy going around, said Sergio Garcia, playing in his eighth Ryder Cup for Team Europe this week. Sometimes its a little bit on the edge, but it was great fun.The energy, and that edge, was largely provided by the heavily biased galleries. Running the gamut from passionate to over-the-top, fans yelled and screamed throughout the day, and not just inappropriate things at inappropriate times, either. Its the reason why Jordan Spieth continually shushed his own supporters when they cheered his opponents foibles. And why McIlroy, when he made that match-clinching eagle putt to conclude the day, insisted on a celebration that wouldve gotten him 15 yards and a fine in an NFL end zone.Look, its a hostile environment out there, and I just want everyone thats watching out there to know how much this means to us, how much it means to me personally and obviously us as a team, McIlroy said. I bowed to them, said, Youre welcome for the show.Even U.S. captain Davis Love III, he of the 4-0 early advantage and 5-3 end-of-day lead, could set aside his thoughts on the overall result of the two sessions and realize the drama it provided.[Europe] had some fun this afternoon; we had some fun this morning, and we have two more fun days coming up, he said. Im sure well see some more of that.Ah, yes. The best part of this is that there is more to come.If you thought Friday was a rollicking good time, just wait until the weekend, when things really get heated up here at Hazeltine. This absolute freakin blast is only going to get better. LILLE, France -- The last time the spotlight was on Wales in the way it is now at the European Championship, a 17-year-old Pele scored the only goal for Brazil in a World Cup quarterfinal. On Friday, Wales can go one stage further than it did in 1958 -- the last time it made the finals of a major tournament -- when it takes on Belgium for a place in the semifinals of Euro 2016.You have to put this down as the biggest game our country has ever been involved in (since), Wales coach Chris Coleman said on Thursday. Thats a big deal.It is a new kind of pressure on a team UEFA has dubbed one of its two Cinderella stories -- along with Iceland -- at Euro 2016.Its a fantastic pressure to have, a real positive pressure that weve earned, said ColemanColeman added that it was a great place to be. It hasnt always been like that, its been tough. When Coleman took charge in 2012, Wales was ranked outside the top 100 by FIFA and in a downward spiral of low seeding and tough draws while trying to qualify for tournaments. We have experienced the other pressure which is tough, a lot tougher than this one we have got, I can promise you that, the former Wales defender said.Coleman said a crucial point in the turnaround was when Wales drew 1-1 against World Cup-bound Belgium in October 2013.The two teams were again grouped in qualifying for Euro 2016 and Wales more than held its own: A 0-0 draw in Brussels and a 1-0 win in Cardiff, clinched by Gareth Bales goal.Coleman cautioned against seeking form lines from games played more than a year ago.Whatever we know about Belgium, the games we hhave had in the past will count for nothing, he said.ddddddddddddWhat could count is the fitness of key defenders on either side.Belgium will be without left back Jan Vertonghen, who will miss the rest of the tournament after twisting his ankle in trainingHes an outstanding performer so if he misses the game its a big loss for Belgium, Coleman said before confirmation of the scale of the injury.Belgium will also be without center back Thomas Vermaelen, who is serving a one-match ban.By contrast, Wales has been boosted by captain Ashley Williams recovering from a left shoulder injury. The 31-year-old center back collided with a teammate in the 1-0 over Northern Ireland in the round of 16 last Saturday. Its obviously great news for us, positive news that hes going to be available, Coleman said of Williams. He has never, ever disappointed me, on or off the pitch.Belgium comes into the match in form, following its 4-0 drubbing of Hungary in the round of 16. It also has the potential advantage of playing what is almost a home match. Lille is just 10 kilometers away from the Belgian border.Coleman noted that while Belgium play with imagination, they have got pace and power, his own team, with a defense-minded reputation, has scored just one goal fewer. When it is time to defend, we will defend with our lives, the Wales coach said. And when it is time to attack, we will attack with our lives. If we do that, Belgium will be in for a hell of a game. ' ' '
